Hello readers, stalkers, and others interested in my website!

I’m Dylan Shobe! (And to most, sometimes just “Shobe”) Long before my current status as a journalism student at Boston University, I started this website in 2020. After the pandemic locked us inside and forcing all of us to consume more media—aka having way too much time on our hands—I turned to one of my favorite pastimes, watching movies. So I turned to my father for recommendations, who, unbeknownst to me would soon fundamentally shape my artistic taste and spark dialogue about films that led me here, to this website.

He would prescribe me a film, provide me with his patented dad-type lecture about what he thinks of the work, and then I’d promptly go to our basement—thirty or some minutes later—to watch it. Feeling as though my teenage opinion mattered, I’d also record a score for each film on my phone’s notes app. Once I moseyed up the stairs to see my Dad still relaxing on the couch, wine glass in his palm, I would give him my thoughts. We’d discuss the film, often doomed to be divided from our generational gap, but eventually the conversations motivated me to create reviews to supplement the scores. This process duped me into taking my leisurely (and quite mindless) hobby of home moviegoing and combine it with a necessary and productive skill: writing.

Five years later, I still try to write as much as I can get around to it, even while I am most passionate about broadcast journalism. Whether it’s a film review, an exploratory essay, or some other blurred mode of expression, I am grateful for the creative space this website (and my dad’s twenty-year old dylanshobe.com url) has given me. Please read and explore on, as my website includes lots of different content!
